Caleb’s Comfort Cakes and Cookies

 Caleb’s Comfort Cakes and Cookies

“God is the Father who is full of mercy and all comfort.  He comforts us every time we have trouble, so when others have trouble, we can comfort them with the same comfort God gives us.  We share in the many sufferings of Christ.  In the same way, much comfort comes to us through Christ.”  2 Corinthians 1:3-5

Comfort foods are the foods that remind us of the way our home smelled when momma or grandma had our favorite goodies in the oven.  Caleb and I started baking cakes, cookies and candies together when he was just two years old.  I would sit him on the counter to help me bake.  He could not walk and did not remember many things but eventually memorized a pound cake recipe.  Caleb is a twin who was born breech.  A blood vessel broke in his brain at birth which caused the worse brain bleed that one could have.  Because of his bleed, he has Cerebral Palsy and seizures. He has had 17 brain surgeries and many other complications.  We were told that he might not walk, talk or perform many daily tasks, but we hung onto God’s promise that He had a plan for Caleb’s life. Caleb always gets so excited when given the opportunity to bake.  I know that baking can be a way that Caleb can be used by God.  Caleb comforts others by telling his story and baking things for others.

Comfort foods remind me of the comfort we have in God.  Knowing that God is in control of everything can always comfort us.  He uses everything to His Glory.  God can even use Caleb who has brain damage, Cerebral Palsy, seizures, and who rarely speaks due to anxiety to comfort others with his cakes and cookies.  Our real comfort comes in knowing that the problems of this world are only temporary.  God promises that there are no tears in heaven.  We pray that you will find comfort in knowing God and knowing that He has a plan for your life also.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.”  Jeremiah 29:11
